I watched the movie “For Colored Girls” two weeks ago, and as much as I wanted to blog about it, and share my thoughts and my opinion on this harsh/slap in the face/ the ugly truth movie, I still feel as if I did not completely grasp the message or the picture that the author of the book, not Tyler Perry, wanted to convey. So before I do talk about it, I will read the book, and maybe it will shine a light on the parts are beyond me.
But there is one thing that I felt was addressed to me. That lady put into words what I was feeling, it’s as if she was reading my autobiography.
Somebody almost walked off wid alla of my stuff….Once sentence that I kept with me, got me thinking about that time of my life, when somebody almost walked off with alla my stuff.

waz a lover/ i made too much room for/ almost run off wit alla my stuff/ & i didnt know i’d give it up so quik/ & the one runnin wit it/ don’t know he got it/ & i’m shoutin this is mine/ & he dont know he got it/ my stuff is the anonymous ripped off treasure of the year/
did you know somebody almost got away wit me/ me in a plastic bag under their arm/ me danglin on a string of personal carelessness/ i’m spattered wit mud & city rain/ & no i didnt get a chance to take a douche/ hey man/ this is not your perogative/ i gotta have me in my pocket/ to get round like a good woman shd/ & make the poem in the pot or the chicken in the dance/
This poem came from the lady who could not find it in her to leave this man, who she knew was no good. This man who kept on leaving her for some other woman, and would come back whenever he felt like it. She gave it all to him, everything she had and what she didn’t have, and he almost walked off with it all, with all she was, and she did nothing to stop him.
Every time that this man left, she would run to his closet and his drawers to see if he took his clothes, that was her only hope that he would come back.
I’ve never lived with a man, never waited for a man to come back to me after he had been with some other girl. But I have given all of my stuff to people who didn’t even care to realize that they were about to walk out of my life, with all of my stuff. I’m not referring to the physical, not referring to material things, and definitely not only referring to past relationships. I am talking about people who abused of your innocence, people who knew it would tear my heart apart when they left the house without notice, people who knew I was just a resting stop on their path, yet they were ready to walk off with alla my stuff.
…Now I’m left with this thick brick wall all around me. Afraid to let anyone in, and afraid to give an inch of my stuff. How do I know that history is not going to repeat itself? How do I know what to expect if you act so careless? I’m not gonna wait til my phone rings to know that you’re still around… why do I have to function on your terms? How am I suppose to turn this brick wall into a wooden wall when I don’t know that you won’t tear it down, and try to walk of with alla my stuff….

hmmmmm I did cry on that part of the movie, and out of all the poems, that one stayed in my mind…..I am glad to see you expressing your feelings so freely, if you can do it, one day I will too lol 😉

IM A BIG FAN OF TYLER PERRY, HOWEVER THIS MOVIE I THINK WAS A-LITTLE OVER THE TOP, WHICH OF COURSE BLACK MEN AGAIN BEING PRO-TRADED IN THIS FILM AS THE NEGATIVE PROBLEM FOR THE BLACK OR SHOULD I SAY COLORED GIRLS. IT SEEMS THAT BLACK WOMEN CAN NOT IM-POWER THEM-SELVES WITH POSTIVE FILMS WITHOUT THE SAME OLD STEREO TYPES OF DOWN LOW BROTHERS,AN ACOHOLIC ,A RAPIST ETC. YOU KNOW? THE “WAITING TO EXHALE’ BROTHERS THE LAZY OVER SEX CHEATERS WHO CANT BE FAITHFUL TO THE BLACK WOMEN. SISTERS?!! GIVE US A BREAK, THE PROBLEM IN OUR COMMUNITIES IS NOT SOLELY A BLACKMAN ISSUE IF I MAY PUT IT THAT WAY; BUT THE ROOTS OF SLAVERY ,RACISM ETC. I hear you brother and it is sad that it is made to appear like that but the ugly truth of the matter is that when the numbers of bad out weight the good the bad tends to show its face a lot more. i love my black men and wouldn’t want to be with some one of another race but I’m going through with some of the same stuff right now with my black man and i would prefer it that he did not get away with all of me

Thank you for subscribing! Always a pleasure to read a man’s input on women’s issues. Fist let me start by saying that I am Haitian American, born in the States but raised in Haiti. With that said, I have no idea what it feels like to be raised in a typical black American,broken home, which these movies so often portray. Although I have a complete different background from these women in the movie, I honestly could relate to most of them. Not to be a sexist but the things that we go through, men cannot begin to imagine. Not sure if this only pertain to colored girls for I also have no knowledge of the culture of a typical White American female, but I think that it is safe to say that, they can also relate to some extent.
I do believe it has a lot to do with culture and background,but it’s just the ugly truth.
Disclaimer: I do believe that there are some wonderful, educated black men out there. I know actually know a couple! 😉

true it could have portrayed different couples from different race and called it “For Women” but i think it was for the black women so it spoke at them in their world, the ones who are experiencing things like this. I’m speaking of this because I have been molested by a black man, I have been cheated on by black men, I have been abused by a black man, I have been infected with an std by a black man and I have felt for a long long time stolen by a black man. this is a true for me no white, Asian, Hispanic or any race did that to me. and this has not harden my heart to a black man or made me bitter i still love my black men and still would give my all but i want to have the choice to give it

I can see where you’re coming from as a black man. While I have been raised with and by some awesome black male figures, the black community, regardless of our background, have created some type of stereotype from other races. I do appreciate your sympathy towards my fellow Haitians, but the corruption that is going on with our government has always been the main reason why he country is in this mess today. No I don’t believe the earthquake was a curse from God, it was something natural that caused a disaster because of the way that the country was built. I strongly believe that we received tons of funds, that did not go towards the right cause. Haiti is another case of the rich gets richer and the poor gets poorer…sadly. Rest assured that I am well aware of the prejudice, stereotype, and racism that is going on in this messed up world that we live in.

Hi, I found this as I was googling the line “somebody almost walked off with all my stuff”. I just finished watching the movie like 15 min ago, and that poem and specifically that line is stuck in my head. I thought the poem was incredible because it really transcended all of the women and their respective scenarios in the movie. All of them faced some serious stuff that could have left them lifeless…but the truth is someone ALMOST walked off with it…and by the end of the movie, it appeared that the women would walk again, not letting those things suck the life and being out of them. The message carries a rather important reminder for women, in general.
I think the movie is much more about the women than it is the men, so I’m sorry that there are guys who were frustrated with the portrayal of men…and regardless of the race of the cast members, the themes in the movie cross all barriers of race, religion, economic status and education levels (i.e. rape, abuse, adultery, homosexuality, women, abortion, etc). I see it in my life and the lives of women I’ve talked to around the world. A woman’s heart is a woman’s heart, and there are atrocities and painful choices that occur every day. For example, I’m a white girl, and I could relate to them. I almost had to stop the movie at one point, but I stuck it out and by the end of it I wanted to sit around the circle with them, sharing my own “my love is too…”

I do approve that the movie was not only for colored women but women of all races and culture somehow can relate to this powerful movie. It is unfortunate that a lot of people only saw the negative side of it (i.e misjudging black man) nevertheless, It spoke of the sad reality that women face everyday.

This is to my brothers out there who are thinking that this movie down graded them. Let me first by saying that I love men, white , black, yellow, brown, or green. The first thing that you should realize is that this movie was not about you. I think that some of you may be taking this to heart because somewhere down inside you , you have mistreated a woman regardless of her color. This movie was simply about women. Not just black women, but women of all races. In our modern day society. women are still fighting to be considered equal. We do the same work and in so many instances do so much more on a daily basis them men could even fathom. We are the mothers, the fathers, the teachers, the nurses, the confidant, the friend, the lover. And at the end of the day, we give so much of ourselves that there is nothing left to give ourselves. Just think of how many times in a day do say to your mate ….Hey Baby can you…..fill in whatever you want. The scenario is the same. My hat goes off to Tyler Perry for taking the time to rewriite a highly controversial play and relate it to modern day times so that the young sisters out there know that you can get up after you fall. Notice i didn’t say black or white sisters I said all sisters. If one woman who has been through a trying ordeal would take just a moment to share her story or reach out her hand to someone younger and naive, we could save alot of heartbreaki in this world. Just remember a kind word of encouragement could save a life.
The whole thing about it is that you don’t know. You’re stuck until you don’t have anything left and say fuck it and then the man that will treat you right gets nothing from you then you walk off with his stuff. T’aint right I tell ya. It just isn’t. Y’all just made me realize I need to seek out women who aren’t part of this crazy cycle. It breeds the wrong kind of passion.
